RALEIGH SCULPTURE GROUP
The Raleigh Sculpture Group is devoted to the artistic interpretation and exploration
of the human form through the medium of clay sculpture. A wide range of individual abilities and interests
are accommodated. Participants who have not had previous clay sculpture training may wish to receive individual
instruction during their initial participation with the group. Instruction will emphasize basic sculpting
techniques and provide assistance and guidance in accurately seeing, and realistically interpreting, human anatomy.
The instruction will help participants create sculptures that are correct in form and proportion.
The procedure for making a basic armature and the proper technique for constructing a sculpture that can be fired in a kiln
will be demonstrated. To advance skills in rendering human anatomy a nude model in either a standing, seated,
or reclining pose will be used for all sessions except when the group is working on portrait busts. An
attempt will be made to alternate between different types of models, body types, age groups, racial groups and gender.
Sessions are limited to no
more than seven (7) participants at a time. Sessions are 3 hours in length and are held from 6:30 to 9:30
PM. Normally there are two sessions scheduled each week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday nights)
with a female posing one night and a male another night. Once the group agrees on a pose for the model,
that pose will normally be used for 4-8 sessions. The number of sessions with a particular model or pose
may be extended or reduced based on the difficulty of the pose and/or the wishes of the group.
Ongoing sculpture sessions are held at Litmus Gallery
& Studios located at 312 W. Cabarrus Street in downtown Raleigh. Sculpture stands are provided for
participants. Water based clay at a cost of $11.00 per 25-pound bag will be available for purchase at the
studio or participants may bring their own clay for use. The cost is $20 per session without instruction.
The cost for someone wanting individual instruction is $25 for each of the first 4 sessions and thereafter $20 for all additional
sessions. The fee covers the cost of a model, rental of studio space, use of sculpture stands and equipment,
and as applicable individual instruction. Participants who wish may have their completed sculpture bisque fired
by Litmus Gallery staff at a cost of $10.00.

MODEL REQUIREMENTS - FIGURATIVE POSES
RALEIGH SCULPTURE GROUP
Immortality through Sculpture: Be Sculpted ~ Be
Immortalized
Models are needed
on a regular basis for the Raleigh Sculpture Group, which is a small group of sculptors interested in figurative traditions
and in creating sculptures that are in the style of classical realism. Nude models are used to advance skills
in rendering human anatomy. The group usually meets on weeknights, 6:30-9:30 PM. Models
are also occasionally needed for sculpture classes and for individual sculptors who want to sculpt outside of the sculpture
group. In acquiring models, an attempt is made to alternate between male and female models, various ethnic
and racial groups, different body types, and different age groups. Previous modeling experience, while
helpful, is not a requirement. The group members and individual sculptors usually decide on a general or
compositional theme that will guide what is sculpted. An attempt is then made to acquire a model that best
fits that compositional theme. It is obvious that the model needed to do a sculpture of a marathon runner
would be quite different from the model needed to do a sculpture of a Sumo wrestler.
The
most important qualities for figurative models are dependability, ability to hold a pose, and being comfortable posing nude.
Models need to report to sculpting sessions on time and be dependable in completing all the sessions agreed upon.
The same pose is used for all sessions and the number of sessions normally needed for completing a sculpture may vary
from 1 to 10 sessions.
Figurative sculpture sessions are normally scheduled to be 3
hours in duration. During a 3-hour session the model will pose nude for 20 to 25-minute time intervals
separated by 5-minute breaks and a longer 15-minute break midway through the 3-hour session. Models should
be reasonably sure that they can remain in the agreed upon pose before the sculpting begins. Temporarily
getting out of a pose to stretch or other necessity is acceptable.
For
prospective models without previous experience as a sculpture model, an initial 3-hour modeling session is scheduled so that
the model can determine if they are comfortable doing this specific type of modeling. This also allows an opportunity to determine
what type of pose or compositional theme would work best for a particular model. Pay for modeling is $50.00
per 3-hour session.
Sculpture sessions are held at Litmus Gallery & Studios,
312 W. Cabarrus Street, in Downtown Raleigh. Additional questions:

MODEL REQUIREMENTS - PORTRAIT POSES
RALEIGH
SCULPTURE GROUP
Models are needed
on a regular basis for the Raleigh Sculpture Group, which is a small group of sculptors interested in classically based, figurative
traditions. The group usually meets weeknights, 6:30-9:30 PM. Models are also occasionally
needed for sculpture classes and for individual sculptors who want to sculpt outside of the sculpture group or club.
In acquiring models, an attempt is made to alternate between male and female models, various ethnic and racial groups,
different facial features, and different age groups. Previous modeling experience, while helpful, is not
a requirement. The group members and individual sculptors usually decide on a general or compositional
theme that will guide what is sculpted. An attempt is then made to acquire a model that best fits that
compositional theme.
The most important qualities for portrait models
are dependability and ability to hold a pose. Models need to report to sculpting sessions on time and be
dependable in completing all the scheduled sessions when agreeing to pose. The number of sessions normally
needed to complete a sculpture may vary from 1 to 10 sessions.
Sculptors will
be sculpting the head, neck and possibly a portion of the upper chest during portrait sculpture sessions. A
shirt, tee shirt, or blouse that exposes as much of the neck as possible is desirable. If possible, the
same upper garment should be worn for all sessions.
Portrait sculpture sessions are normally scheduled to be 3 hours in duration. During a 3-hour
session the model will pose for 25-minute time intervals separated by 5-minute breaks with a longer 15-minute break midway
in the 3-hour session. Models should be reasonably sure that they can remain in the agreed upon pose before
sculptors begin sculpting. While in the pose, eating or wearing earphones are not permitted and conversations
with sculptors should be limited. Temporarily getting out of a 25-minute pose to stretch or other necessity is
acceptable.
For prospective models without previous
experience as a sculpture model, an initial 3-hour modeling session is desirable so that the model can determine if they are
capable of doing this specific type of modeling. This also allows an opportunity to determine what type
of pose or compositional theme would work best for a particular model. The pay for modeling for a 3-hour
session is $40.00.
